HER FLAG Comes to Maine and Gains a Stripe

Marilyn is collaborating with a woman artist from each of the 36 states that ratified the 19th amendment. Each artist creates a stripe for the flag inspired by the struggle for suffrage in her state. Marilyn then visits the state and, in a public performance, stitches the stripe into Her Flag. When finished, her flag will measure 18 feet long x 26 feet high and will be displayed around the country.

Maine's stripe, created by artist Amie Kennedy, was the 19th stripe added to the flag, signifying Maine's place as the 19th state to ratify the 19th amendment. Amie's design incorporated historical women’s suffrage photographs, some showing Maine women such as Florence Brooks Whitehouse. The photographs form letters that spell out the sentence MAINE - THE MILES UNDER THEIR HEELS LED US TO WHERE WE STAND.

While Marilyn sewed, and Amie and more than 45 event attendees looked on, singer Jenny Lou Drew provided a wonderful musical performance of her own compositions.
