Margaret Chase Smith Essay Contest
To commemorate the centennial of women’s suffrage, the Margaret Chase Smith Library invited Maine high school seniors to assess the arguments for and against an Equal Rights Amendment, something Senator Smith supported dating back to the 1940s.
The top prize winners in the 23rd annual Margaret Chase Smith Essay Contest are: first place and $1000 - Madeleine Archer, Lincoln Academy, Newcastle; second place and $500 - Marielle Pelletier, Mt. Blue High School, Farmington; and third place and $250 - Gabrielle Theriault, Hall-Dale High School, Farmingdale. The essays will be published in the Maine Policy Review.
